Images that end in .jpg or .png are two of the most common image file types. Both store visual content like photos, illustrations, and screenshots—but they work differently under the hood.
JPG (or JPEG) files use lossy compression, which means some image quality is sacrificed to reduce file size. This makes JPGs ideal for everyday use, especially when storage space or faster loading is a concern. However, once compressed, you lose some image data permanently. On the other hand, PNG files are lossless—they keep all original image data intact, which results in higher quality. PNGs also support transparent backgrounds, a major advantage for graphic design, web use, or when overlaying images on other visuals. However, PNGs don’t support CMYK color (used in printing), so they aren’t ideal for print jobs.
✅ Transparency Support JPGs can't have transparent backgrounds, but PNGs can. If you're editing a logo, product image, or anything where you want part of the image to be invisible, PNG is the way to go. ✅ Lossless Quality PNGs preserve full image quality. If you're working with high-detail graphics or screenshots and want to avoid further compression, converting to PNG ensures nothing is lost. ⚠️ Not Ideal for Printing PNGs use RGB color space, not CMYK. If you plan to print the image later, keep the original JPG too, or consider converting to a print-friendly format.
